THE GARVIN-BOYD TREE
Theodore Lawrence Boyd June 24,1961

(Son of Theo and Donna Boyd)
(Husband of Kay Christine Burns Boyd)

Theodore Lawrence Boyd was named for his father and his grandmother's husband Lawrence R. Clark. His mother intended to call him Larry, but when the Powells and Clarks came to visit us in Rosamond, California, and especially when the Boyds visited them in Muskogee, Oklahoma, all insisted on calling him "Teddy" because he looked so much like his father. Donna's Aunt Irene called him "Tedder" and his sister Viki called him "Yarrybugs" as she had not mastered the "L".

"I had not made any great contribution to humanity at this point. Happy Birthday to me all dressed up!" (Quote from Ted L. Boyd)
This picture was taken on the occasion of his first birthday. It was taken at the Muskogee, Oklahoma home of Goss and Jessie Powell, the paternal great grandparents.

When Ted L. was born, his parents lived in Rosamond, California. Theo was teaching in the junior high and Donna was working part time in the Rosamond branch of the Kern County Public Library.

Rosamond is not far from Edwards Air Force Base where jets first broke the sound barrier.Like many communities, Rosamond was concerned about civil defense. The air raid shelter was in the glory hole of an old gold mine.

Theo and Donna went to Ted L's Garvin grandparents home in Long Beach,California for his birth . Wells, Betty, Kelly and Kathy lived in Garden Grove, California within sight of the Disneyland fireworks which became their bedtime signal whenever they visited the Garvins.

Ted L. started school in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. He was really too young for kinder, but the teacher invited him to attend with Viki.

The kindergarten program there featured a spring program in which Viki played a lady bug and Ted a dwarf.

They played "no neck monsters" in Layfayette Little Theatre's production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

They also played in the children's production of "Winnie the Pooh". Viki was "Piglet" and Ted L. a skunk.

Perhaps his best community theatre role was "Pud" in "On Borrowed Time" in Independence, Missouri.

He played numerous roles through high school and college after getting off to an early start in kinder.

Ted continued his education in Louisiana and Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in Independence, Missouri. He excelled in speech and debate.

He attended Central State University, and several others finally earning his Bachelor's degree from Park College at Parkville, Missouri.

His bipolar illness plagued him and delayed his dreams, but with quiet persistence and the constant loving support of his paternal grandparents, he graduated.

Ted L worked up a monologue of Mike Fink and performed it at the Campus in Independence, Missouri for Harvesters to benefit flood victims. He is a man of many talents and great compassion. His sense of humor is a delight to many. He is witty and timely with his remarks. He is a gentle giant with a tender heart always yearning for peace within and around about.

Our family jester wanted to be a Jester for the Kansas City Royals. Somehow it make more sense than a lion mascot, but after several years without a mascot, they chose Slugerr.
