Her birth made Donna's sister Kathy an aunt at just over a year old and Kelly an uncle at three years of age. Betty enjoyed her kids and grandkids but commented that the age proximity kept her from being the kind of Grandmother she wanted to be. Viki rode on my hip much of the day as there were no infant seats at that time. I talked to her like an adult and called her my barnacle. My paternal grandparents had brought me sea souvenirs from their travels. Among them were some barnacles. I meant it to convey to Viki the closeness I felt to her. Though she had no idea what a barnacle was, "barncul" was one of her first words. She was very talkative. She was interested in books and writing before she was a year old. One day she was trying to help me clean the house. She said very discouraged "I can't broom the floor!" When she was about 4 she wrote the words to "Away in a Manger" phoenetically but right to left. Still an amazing feat for 4. Viki did well in school until the 8th grade. She was in school and community dramas. She sang with the Church choir at 13. She earned a guitar about that time and began writing much of her own music. Viki and Roger married when she was 15. After the children were born less than a year apart, she continued her education through the GED program. They made their home in Olathe, Kansas after Roger graduated from the Electronics Institute and then in Edgerton, Kansas. Many wedges were driven between them by circumstances and unfortunate circumstances. They divorced while the children were very young. Roger supported the children and saw them occasionally. He worked in Independence, Kansas. Viki made her home in Kansas City, Missouri. He was killed in a wreck. Josh and Jessie who had a dream of knowing their father better in adulthood, were very sad. Through the years and many difficulties, Viki has been a joyful person, very empathatic to others and sharing generously at every opportunity. |
